Resilient Spokers,

What’s a moment that tested you? What supported you to be resilient?

I’ve been reflecting on that over the past 2 weeks and here we are for a Part 3 (Missed those newsletter, check them out now).

If resilience is so key to dealing with life’s challenges and can be something you can grow, how can you grow it?

The APA (for those of you who just had flashbacks to high school English class, this is not a crash course in how to cite source) sees four key areas of your life that support you in being resilient:

  • Connection

  • Wellness

  • Perspective

  • Purpose

Connection:

  • Have you ever struggled and don’t want to drag people down by sharing the truth in your heart? So you don’t accept help and that makes being on the struggle bus even harder? I have been there! Psychologists encourage you to do just the opposite. Accept help! Call people in!

Wellness:

  • You’ve probably heard it from your physician on your annual physical. How many hours of sleep do you get? What’s your diet (as in nutrition)? How often do you exercise? These things that are good for your health are also great for you to be more resilient.

Purpose:

  • Last week I mentioned The Resilience Scale, a questionnaire to understand how resilient someone is. And the scale gives a lot of clues of how feeling a sense of purpose makes us more resilient (One question: I feel proud that I have accomplished things in life). Moving towards your goals and learning from silver linings when things are especially challenging activates our sense of purpose.

Perspective:

  • At Circle and Spoke’s May ride, we biked up a half a mile incline.  Once we reached our destination we paused and discussed what supported us in the saddle to get up the hill. One person used that time to sing a riff on the Oompa Loompa song as she pedaled up a hill. Another person used the climb as an opportunity to notice tension in her body and find ways to relax areas that perhaps didn’t need to be so tense. There are different ways to look at the challenges before us. Being able to see the climb of life from different angles, helps the climb be more feasible.

Are you trying to grow your resilient heart and spirit?

I invite you to pull out your journal for five minutes today. Take one of these areas: Connection , Wellness, Perspective, Purpose.

How are you flexing this in your life? If you were called to grow that quality in your life, what might that look like?

Sending high fives to you resilient spoker!

Wheels up,

Ellen
