Golden Birthdays and Golden Rides

A little reminder from a seven year old to find the golden moments of life

Henry announced to the room on Friday, “It’s my golden birthday tomorrow” followed by a very long pause.

He knew it was his golden birthday, but didn’t know how to explain it. There was an elongated pause and the crowd patiently waited.

Soon I learned that a golden birthday is when the date of your birthday matches the years of life you are turning. In Henry’s case, he was turning 7 on December 7th.

My golden birthday happened years ago, but it’s never too late to celebrate something golden in your life.

Yesterday in DC, the temperatures were uncharacteristically warm after a streak of frozen days.

66 degrees in DC in December… I didn’t have to bundle up for a ride

It took a bit of coaxing, but I got out the door and onto my bike.

At first, I was counting signs of Santa in the neighborhood (blow up Santa, Santa flag!) and then I came across a gingko tree that had shed its golden leaves in a carpet like arrangement. I admired the leaves, snapped a few pics and then continued on my way.

So perhaps you’ll go on a Santa ride this month? Or a golden ride?

Choose some sort of thematic element and use that for the entirety or a portion of your ride, as a way to clue yourself into the changing seasons and the beauty that surrounds you.

It doesn’t have to be your golden birthday to feel something special especially when you are riding a bike.

Wheels up,
